The mountainous village of Stregna in Italy is model municipality of the Central European Green Belt 2023
A small and scattered mountainous community on the Italian-Slovenian border distinguished itself along the European Green Belt territory through an enduring vision and commitment to environmental protection, sustainable development, and the preservation of centuries-old traditions.
Each year, the European Green Belt Association honors the most virtuous municipalities along the European Green Belt for its ongoing commitment to environmental conservation, memorial landscape preservation, sustainable land development, cross-border collaboration, and active support for the European Green Belt through public activities and outreach.
This year, the Municipality of Stregna was nominated by the BUND Department Green Belt after being suggested by Rete Italiana European Green Belt Association and the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia to receive the award. On September 12, the Board of the European Green Belt Association decided to award Stregna as “Model Municipality of the Europen Green Belt”, recognizing its strong commitment to active conservation measures, particularly on:
- the organization of IKARUS – Green Belt Festival: a multilingual and multicultural festival full of events to spread knowledge about the unique identity and traditions of this area near to the Italian-Slovenian border;
- the designation and management of the biotope Lower Tribil Meadows – Dolenji Tarbji: the biotope contains Natura 2000 protected sites, which are the natural habitat of many species protected by the Habitats Directive;
- the establishment of the Valle dell’Erbezzo Land Association, which aims at promoting a model of agricultural development and sustainable growth of the area, combating land abandonment and enhancing the identity landscape of the Natisone Valleys.
On November 17 the award ceremony was held in Stregna with the presence of the BUND Department Green Belt, the Regional Coordinator Green Belt Central Europe on behalf of the European Green Belt Association e.V., who on the voice of Melanie Kreutz declaimed the laudatio; the Friuli Venezia Giulia Regional Councilor for Environmental protection, Energy and Sustainable development Fabio Scoccimarro gave the greetings of the Region as National Focal Point; the Association Rete Italiana European Green Belt was represented by Francesca Visintin.
