Challenge

The Nature Reserve “Ances Marshes and Forests” in Latvia, with its unique ecosystems, suffers from historical neglect and faces habitat degradation. Dry grasslands, which are vital for a variety of species, are shrinking. These threats reduce biodiversity and ecosystem services. Action is needed to restore these habitats. This project will breathe new life into the reserve, transforming overgrown dunes and restoring the vibrant mosaic of dry grasslands. It will not only safeguard biodiversity but also improve ecological connectivity within the reserve and beyond.

Objective

The project aims to revitalise the reserve by:

  • Restoring the habitat of the Natterjack Toad: Recreating open dunes by removing vegetation in 2 ha of overgrown areas.
  • Expanding the reserve: Adding 14.23 ha of privately owned land with valuable old trees, creating a mosaic of open habitats.

Approach

This project uses a multi-pronged approach that combines:

  • Ecological restoration: Active management of habitats to improve their condition for target species.
  • Landscape connectivity: Improving the movement of species within and beyond the reserve.
  • Community-based conservation: Involving local stakeholders, especially youth, in conservation efforts to promote long-term sustainability.

This integrated approach aims to achieve not only ecological improvements but also social benefits for the local community.

Expected Results

This project will achieve its goals through a multi-pronged approach that combines targeted habitat restoration, improved ecological connectivity, and active community engagement. By working together and embracing the spirit of conservation, we can ensure that the Ances Marshes and Forests Nature Reserve continues to thrive for generations to come, a living testament to the power of community action and the beauty of Latvian nature!
