Cross-border handshake between people and nature
The transboundary project is implemented by Spolek Ametyst in collaboration with LBV-Zentrum Mensch und Natur from November 2024 to September 2026.
Challenge
The European Green Belt area on the Czech-Bavarian border region faces challenges such as climate change and the loss and fragmentation of open habitats. Sites are often abandoned and no longer used for agricultural purposes. The habitat of an important umbrella species, the viper, is threatened. Data on the distribution of important species in the area and local awareness of their positive impact on the landscape are often lacking.
Objective
The project aims to gather data on model species and their importance for the local nature. We will connect people from both sides of the border and from different interest groups, promote the unique landscape of the European Green Belt and involve local people in its exploration and in nature conservation activities.
Approach
We aim to achieve the project objectives by:
- Mapping and monitoring key habitats (beaver-influenced sites, potential viper habitats).
- Improving viper habitats.
- Involving local youth in biodiversity monitoring and habitat restoration activities.
- Raising public awareness through events and a nature trail.
- Encouraging cross-border cooperation.
- Producing materials for the use by the public, local and regional authorities and environmental professionals.
Expected Results
We will provide science-based data on target species and key habitats (45 km2 of beaver and 30 km of viper habitat) that will feed into national databases. A school class from the Czech Republic and one from Germany will be involved in biodiversity and beaver monitoring during 3 events. Youth volunteers will help to restore and connect viper habitats at two different sites. Two public guided walks will be organised during the European Green Belt Days in 2025 and 2026, and the existing nature trail with will be renewed.
Cross-border handshake between people and nature
The transboundary project is implemented in the South-Western part of the Czech Republic and the neighbouring area of Germany (municipalities of Všeruby (CZ) and Eschlkam (GER), Nemanice (CZ) and Schönsee (GER), Český les Protected Landscape Area (CZ), Naturpark Oberer Bayerischer Wald and Naturpark Oberpfälzer Wald (GER).
