Cultural and natural inventory of the European Gren Belt at the Bavarian-Czech border

The transboundary project is implemented by the BUND Naturschutz in Bayern e.V., Kreisgruppe Passau in collaboration with Hnutí DUHA - Friends of the Earth Czech Republic from October 2024 to May 2026.

Challenge

Information on historical and natural features along the former Iron Curtain is often lacking and interested visitors must undertake extensive research to find sources of information. Without sufficient signposting on site and network coverage to access information about the area online, knowledge and memories are lost - and an opportunity to raise awareness of nature and history is missed.

Objective

The project will focus on the 358 km long Bavarian-Czech border area along the European Green Belt. The aim is to create a digital encyclopaedia documenting the natural and cultural-historical sites in this area. In addition to the history of the heavily fortified border between Germany and the Czech Republic, we will also shed light on today's valuable biotopes and protected areas.

Approach

A comprehensive and geo-based inventory of 200 Points of Interest along the Bavarian-Czech border will be used to create a digital map with high-quality photos, informative texts and archive material. Together with our Czech partner, we will  document all Points of Interest on site, take photos and provide relevant geodata. Interviews will complement the information. All content will be edited and made available in three languages. The data will be available for apps and web platforms and will be released for non-commercial use.

Expected Results

Our project strengthens the experience of the European Green Belt. It promotes awareness of biodiversity and democratic values, thus contributing to people’s well-being. It also communicates the importance of preserving our ecosystem. In addition to the protection of biodiversity, the project explains the history of the border region and makes people aware of democratic and European values.
