Restoring species-rich grasslands on former Robinia forest sites

The project is implemented by the Land Trust Hády in collaboration with the Podyji National Park from October 2024 to September 2026.

Challenge

Several semi-natural dry grasslands in the Podyjí National Park are strongly affected by invasive species. To restore and increase biodiversity in areas previously dominated by these species, it is essential to introduce seeds of native grasses. However, regional seed mixtures specific to the Podyjí National Park are not yet available.

Objective

The project aims to enhance the collection and distribution of seeds collected from local grasslands to restore areas that are dominated by invasive species, with a focus on the conservation of the region’s biodiversity.

Approach

  • The main activities of the project are:
  • Winter management of dry grasslands: Identifying suitable areas for the seed collection during the summer and preparing the land.
  • Development and testing of brush harvesters
  • Seed collection and distribution: Collection of regional seed mixes from dry grasslands and distribution on cleared areas.
  • Preparation of receptor sites: Creating the right conditions for the seeds to germinate.

Expected Results

  • Seed harvester development: Development of several types of seed harvesters for efficient seed collection.
  • Seed collection and sowing: Collect and distribute at least 100 kg of native seed material to support biodiversity.
  • Grassland preparation: Prepare 3 hectares of species-rich grassland as a seed source for future harvest.
  • Woodland conversion: Prepare 3 hectares of former robinia woodland for seeding with native grasses.
  • Project presentation: Present project progress at a meeting of the Podyjí-Thayatal National Park, including input from local mayors.
