Challenge

The Kamień Lagoon and Dziwna River in north-western Poland, part of the European Green Belt and a Natura 2000 site, are critical habitats for diverse migratory and resident bird species. This serene landscape, however, is negatively impacted by economic activities and detrimental development that threaten the delicate balance of this vital habitat. Without urgent, targeted action, these threats could irreversibly damage one of Poland's most treasured natural areas and its biodiversity.

Objective

This conservation project aims to preserve the region's unique avifauna amidst growing human pressures by combining scientific research with community engagement. Central to the initiative is the establishment of an evidence-based bird monitoring system to assess and protect the local biodiversity. The monitoring system will guide the revision of conservation plans in place to enhance protection measures and strengthen ecological resilience. The desired outcome is a well-monitored, thriving habitat that supports a stable, diverse bird population, balancing environmental conservation with responsible human activity.

Approach

Systematic surveys and data analysis will inform updates to conservation strategies while fostering collaboration with local authorities and organizations. Educational outreach and volunteer involvement will empower the local community, enhancing knowledge and capacity for independent, long-term conservation efforts. The project will achieve its goals through systematic monthly bird monitoring to collect essential data on populations and habitat conditions in the Kamień Lagoon and Dziwna River area. Using this data, conservation plans will be updated to meet current environmental needs. Collaborating with local authorities, environmental groups, and academia will ensure regional expertise and support, while community engagement efforts will involve local volunteers and raise awareness.

Expected Results

The project aims to transform the Kamień Lagoon and Dziwna River area into a model of effective conservation. It envisions a well-documented conservation plan, guiding sustainable management of this ecologically significant area. Expected outcomes include strengthened protection for bird species including monthly bird counts, increased public awareness of biodiversity including hands-on work with volunteers, and a model framework for preserving sensitive ecosystems. Together, these efforts aim to harmonize human progress with the region's natural heritage, leading to a sustainable future for this vital ecosystem.
