Unveiling the European Green Belt: A Cinematic Journey along the former Iron Curtain

The five-part series by filmmaker Alice Whitehouse introduces you to some of the conservationists, biologists and educators working tirelessly to protect vulnerable species and habitats along the European Green Belt.

In her five-part documentary series about the former Iron Curtain, the young filmmaker and National Geographic Explorer Alice Whitehouse brings you closer to the European Green Belt. The National Geographic funded series takes us along the Baltic coast, and Scandinavia to the shores of the Adriatic and Black Seas and reveals how the former Iron Curtain transitioned into a “lifeline” that offers precious habitats for often rare and endangered species.

This cinematic journey not only immerses you in breathtaking landscapes but also exposes the stories of its heroes on the ground - the conservationists, biologists and educators who work tirelessly to protect vulnerable species and habitats along the European Green Belt, and the challenges they face along the way. It also uncovers the challenges they face on a daily basis, such as the expansion of agriculture, climate change, and human-wildlife conflict.

Moreover, the series captures the synergy and cooperation that unfolds when individuals and organizations join hands across borders, working towards the collective mission of preserving Europe's shared natural and cultural heritage.
