BESTbelt project: Balkania Route
Walking the Path of Sustainability
Background & Location
The BESTbelt project “Balkania Route: Two Steps towards Others” led by the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation, has brought together many partners to develop a 3,500km scenic trail through the Balkan countries along the European Green Belt. The project aims to showcase the natural beauty of the region, promote its key features and contribute to sustainable livelihoods. One part of the celebration of the European Green Belt Days was held in Serbia on 19 September 2024. The other part took place in Albania and hosted sessions in various schools in the Prespa National Park in Albania.
Objective
In Serbia, the main objective of the celebration was to engage local stakeholders in discussions about the socio-economic impact of the Balkan Green Belt Trail and the importance of the European Green Belt. Participants explored the results of the ground verification for the trail, the challenges encountered and the positive and negative impacts on the surrounding communities. The aim of this collaborative effort was to gather valuable insights for a potential development of an alternative trail across Stara Planina, reflecting the needs and interests of local residents.
In Albania, the idea was to teach children about the European Green Belt, the natural heritage in the Prespa region and the importance of nature conservation.
Approach & Results
The European Green Belt Days celebration successfully brought together a diverse group of participants and provided a platform for sharing knowledge and experience. Discussions on the results of the ground verification highlighted the importance of community involvement in the further development of the trail. More than 15 participants took part in a co-creation session where they worked together to suggest additions to the mapped route, ensuring that it was in line with local priorities and environmental considerations. The meeting also raised awareness of the biodiversity and cultural heritage of the European Green Belt. This connection between community and nature emphasised the importance of conservation efforts and the potential benefits of sustainable tourism for the region.
The celebration ended on a positive note, with participants expressing a strong commitment to further cooperation, united by a common vision of enhancing the Balkan Green Belt Trail and promoting sustainable development along the Balkan Green Belt.
