Background & Location

The celebration of the European Green Belt Days took place in the Štítary Pasture Reserve, which was created within the BESTbelt project on creating a centre of local biodiversity Štítary. Three mares and two foals were born in the reserve. Visitors can also find a bed of historical herbs and an orchard.

Objective

The aim of the event was to inform visitors about the European Green Belt, to raise awareness of the important role it plays in supporting natural ecosystems and to share information about the plants that grow in the region and how Exmoor ponies are helping to restore local biodiversity.

Approach & Results

Two excursions were organised during the celebration: one for children and one for the general public. During the excursion, information was given about the European Green Belt, its goals and how Stítary is working to achieve these goals. As part of the project, trail markers were made for each tree. Educational signs about the European Green Belt and Štítary were also made, as well as worksheets with a crossword puzzle. The crossword contains questions about the European Green Belt and Štítary, and visitors can find the answers on the trail signs. We see the crossword puzzle as a great tool to educate in a fun way. In addition, everyone who completes the crossword puzzle will find a treasure at the end and end the trail on a positive note.
